When the Chrysler 300 sedan was redesigned a few years ago to look more like a luxury car, it received much acclaim and was a hit with buyers.
Fast forward to the 2011 model year, and Chrysler has made a few changes to the design, but essentially, the 300 remains a great-looking, smooth-riding model with improved interior quality.
Chrysler has made a few changes to the exterior, such as shaping the 300 with more rounded features and enlarging the fenders. The front end is more sloping, which Chrysler says improves aerodynamics, producing better fuel efficiency. Visibility is better because of the more inclined windshield, larger side windows and smaller pillars.
But the car retains the overall design style that first caught everyone’s eye a few years back.
The current model boasts a modern, elegant-looking body style.
Chrysler also has upgraded its interior quality, which was an area of weakness for a number of its models. The 300 now has brushed metal segments on the dash and a better grade of materials. Even the lining material on the ceiling and door seems to have been upgraded.
The instrument panel has a pleasant blue hue, and the trim along the doors and dash are attractive. Options available include panoramic moon roof, wood trim and heated front and rear seats. Gone are the pencil-pushing front wheel drive cars that were seen more often in rental car parking lots than driveways; replaced with full size rear wheel drive vehicles that exude American class. Here to take back a trophy from the Germans and Japanese is one of Chrysler’s shinning stars, the 2011 300 Limited.
Like the latest Dodge Charger we tested earlier, the 2011 Chrysler 300 rides on the second variant of the rear wheel drive LX platform. And just as the Charger went through its second generation changes, the 300 followed suit with a new body, new interior, new suspension and new drivetrains. Deep at its core, the 300 still rides on a modified version of a Mercedes-Benz chassis from the days of Daimler-Chrysler. This means that a fully independent, multi-link coil sprung suspension is utilized with slightly softer settings when compared to the Charger’s set up. On the outside, the same aura of class that made the first 300 so successful is present, but much more fresh. It is an excellent blend between retro and contemporary as the new front end features a rounder Chrysler grille, LED head lights and a more mysterious face. Chrome accents galore litter the rest of the car but do not draw too much attention and never look gaudy. The added and oh-so-subtle trunk spoiler and rear LED tail lights finish off the car, which overall, looks classic. Add in the optional 20 inch wheels, and the 2011 300 is a presence-filled as ever.

Chrysler’s new eight-speed automatic transmission will be a $1,000 option when it debuts on the base 2012 Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 on October 1, said the automaker.
The eight-speed transmission will be standard equipment on uplevel models, such as the 2012 Chrysler 300 S and the 2012 Dodge Charger SXT.
The new transmission will be available only on the Pentastar V6, not the Hemi V8.
AUBURN HILLS, Michigan — Chrysler’s new eight-speed automatic transmission will be a $1,000 option when it debuts on the base 2012 Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 on October 1, said the automaker.
The eight-speed transmission will be standard equipment on uplevel models, such as the 2012 Chrysler 300 S and the 2012 Dodge Charger SXT.
“It will start out on the (3.6-liter) Pentastar V6 and we’ll look at rolling it out on V8 models at a later date,” said Vince Muniga, a Chrysler spokesman in a phone conversation with Inside Line on Thursday.
Muniga said that the eight-speed ZF transmission will not be offered on the Hemi V8 at this point.
Chrysler said in a statement that the primary benefit of the new transmission is a boost in fuel economy.
“The result is a 4 mile-per-gallon increase that pushes highway fuel economy to an EPA-rated 31 mpg for the 2012 Chrysler 300 and 2012 Dodge Charger — up from 27 mpg highway over last year’s model,” the statement said.
The EPA has not yet posted any information about the 2012 Chrysler 300 or 2012 Dodge Charger with the eight-speed transmission on its Web site.
Chrysler says this is the first eight-speed transmission in a domestically produced automobile. The new transmission will be offered initially in rear-wheel and all-wheel-drive models of the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger with the V6 engine.
The AAA Daily Fuel Gauge on Thursday said the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline stood at $3.62 versus $2.67 a year ago.

Chrysler’s SRT Vehicles Now Offer Track Experience. Now, when someone buys a Chrysler LLC product built by the Street and Racing Team (SRT), included in the MSRP is the ability to join a truly one-of-a kind experience. Named the SRT Track Experience, the program brings together SRT owners and racing instructors from the Richard Petty Driving Experience so SRT vehicles can reach their limits properly. Those limits can be found on an actual race track and the program is split into four different modules of high performance driving.
The SRT Track Experience allows drivers to push their cars on an autocross course under the watchful eye of professionals. The first of the four modules is a straight-up autocross against the clock on a course set up by the pros. The it moves on to head-to-head which puts drivers against each other on the course instead of the clock. After that they will move onto Driving Dynamic which will allow drivers to follow the instructors through the course followed by a full-blown, no limits Performance Drive.
The SRT Track Experience is available to all SRT owners as well anyone who wants to sign up. The first track day will happen at the Michigan International Speedway in a few weeks.

The Chrysler 200 Super Bowl ad has all the makings of an instant classic. The two-minute long spot had star power, a terrific soundtrack and an uplifting message that struck a chord with the working man. We loved the commercial, and after a strong reception, we fully expected other automakers’ ad agencies to ape elements of Team Pentastar’s idea.
We just didn’t expect that someone to be Audi, which has a strong track record of independent advertising thinking here in the States, even if much of it relies on direct comparisons to the competition. Interestingly, while the German automaker is the one that finds itself squarely in the intellectual property crosshairs, Chrysler isn’t the one doing the complaining. The Detroit Free Press reports that Eight Mile Style, Eminem’s song licensing company, is suing Audi for this German ad for the A6 Avant that is said to use an unauthorized interpretation of “Lose Yourself” from the Eight Mile movie soundtrack.
So Audi is using a song that sounds like “Lose Yourself.” That has little to do with Chrysler’s spot, right? Well, not so much. See, the ad is also over two minutes long, the eerily similar song is used in almost the exact same way, and, well, the two spots look awfully alike.
With the way the songs were used, the way the ad was shot and edited and the similarities between some of the shots, it seems obvious to us that Audi’s ad agency was (*ahem*) inspired by Chrysler’s Super Bowl ad. Chrysler says its new 2012 300C Executive Series is poised to be “the most luxurious Chrysler flagship sedan ever.” That’s a pretty tall order, but one quick glance at the Executive Series’ spec sheet makes us think that The Pentastar may have hit the nail right on the head.
